1 Timothy 4
Bible literacy is at an all-time low.
As the world continues a downward trend of ignoring absolute, established truths and giving way to postmodern thinking, the Bible has been getting the shaft, even among Christians.
We must return to the Word. There is GREAT benefit in doing so. Here are seven reasons as revealed in this chapter:
1) You won’t depart the faith.
A lot of people are leaving church for various reasons. Pretty much every reason points to a lack of knowledge of the Bible. Get to know what you believe, and it’s a non-issue.
2) You won’t fall for lies and weird church trends.
Not sure why your church does what they do? Check it out. If the activity doesn’t line up, then throw it out.
3) You will be better prepared to teach.
This seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many folks at the pulpit are delivering motivational speeches rather than sound doctrine.
4) You will shake off unfounded traditions.
The other extreme to #2 on this list. Just because it’s “always been done this way” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea. Self-righteousness will dissipate in the process.
5) You will improve your life, now and thereafter.
Knowledge of the Word is beneficial in countless ways. Those who know it and do what it says are blessed.
6) You are commanded to know it.
It’s not just a good idea. It’s required reading. And really, once a week is not enough. Would that be sufficient for a work-out, or eating? Of course not.
7) You’ll save yourself and others.
You were saved because you heard the Word of God, the news that Jesus made salvation available through His sacrifice, and you took it up. Knowing this, and presenting yourself as one of good standing among your peers by your obedience to the Bible’s instruction, will draw others to salvation.
By no means is this comprehensive, but perhaps this is sufficient rationale to return to regular study of and obedience to the Word.
Don’t be discouraged! Bible study is a discipline; humans are naturally rebellious, and it’s not going to be automatic or magical. There must be effort. Start by making it a priority for today!
