When and how did I watch this?
October 18th, 2015, on Netflix.
Had I seen this film already?
What did I know about the movie before watching it?
I found out it was a cop thriller, a genre that I completely abhor. I also found out it’s from Hong Kong, making it a foreign film, an attribute I now revere. I found out the plot is somewhat daring and possibly confusing, putting me back in a state of not knowing what to expect.
What do I know about it now?
It worked. The blur of a backstory before the title reveal made me a bit dizzy, which is where the director wanted us all along — who is the real protagonist? There are flashbacks, but nothing is overexplained, and we get a glimpse into the personal lives of the primary characters without the film becoming overly sentimental. At times, the complexity overwhelmed me, but I was right there in the end when everything (or everyone) was unveiled.
Did this affect me personally?
Yes; the question, “Who am I?” was thrust upon me, which was surprising for the genre.
Why is this ranked #207?
It’s likely a regional favorite, but it has characteristics of humanity that one might not expect from this type of movie. It’s thrilling, touching, and thought-provoking.
Did my wife watch/like it?
She enjoyed it.
Would I watch it again?
Yes, likely to get more clarity.
Would I recommend it to a friend?
Does it deserve to be on this list as one of the greatest films of all time?
I think it does, though I think it requires some introspection and perhaps some subjectivity to see most top movie lists.
