#244: Laura (1944)

When and how did I watch this?

August 25th, 2015, on Amazon Prime.

Had I seen this film already?

No.

What did I know about the movie before watching it?

Old film noir.

What do I know about it now?

Very similar to a lot of movies in the time period.  Perhaps it’s historically significant.  Perhaps it’s one of the better told stories with the coolest twist of them all. The murder mystery thing was done a lot in the 40s, however, and this one didn’t stick out to me. Interesting handful of actors. Cool hairstyles and get-ups.

What are some themes in the film?

Betrayal, jealousy, murder, and some seriously unhealthy obsessions with the same chick.

Did this affect me personally?

Nah.  Interesting, but for me, not too memorable.

Why is this ranked #244?

Again, this might be some film standard I’m unaware of.  I liken it to a weaker “Anatomy of a Murder” — same sort of plot, different perspective. There are a couple of better films under it.

Did my wife watch/like it?

She loved it.  She’s big on the mystery stuff.

Would I watch it again?

No.

Would I recommend it to a friend?

Sure.

Does it deserve to be on this list as one of the greatest films of all time?

It’s not even close to “Departures” or “Anatomy of a Murder” in terms of delivery and ability to generate tension. I think this one could be easily mistaken for about 20 other films of the same era and genre.  While all of them might be interesting, the repetitious plot device among them ranking this particular film superfluous and convoluted.

Have your say!
