#226: A Fistful of Dollars (1964)

When and how did I watch this?

September 22nd, 2015, on Amazon Prime.

Had I seen this film already?

No.

What did I know about the movie before watching it?

Eastwood Spaghetti Western.  I expected a high body count.

What do I know about it now?

A high body count is what I got. Clever ruses, tough guy one-liners, massive shootouts, and kooky old guys characterized this one. Hardly anyone lived through the ordeal. Call it Pirates of the Caribbean of the past, if you will.

What are some themes in the film?

Violence, revenge… yeah, that’s about it.

Did this affect me personally?

No/

Why is this ranked #226?

Because it’s Eastwood and it’s a western.  The violence is also increasing as we creep up the list, and this probably tops out anything I’ve seen so far, with the exception of Elite Squad: The Enemy Within.

Did my wife watch/like it?

She enjoyed the tension, but the shooting and such became too much at times.

Would I watch it again?

Probably not.

Would I recommend it to a friend?

Nah.

Does it deserve to be on this list as one of the greatest films of all time?

It probably has historical significance, and it features Eastwood in his element, so perhaps it does belong.  It was a fun film and it features moments of flashy cinematography. There isn’t much depth here, but I don’t think anyone cares.

Have your say!
