#145: The Big Lebowski (1998)

When and how did I watch this?

February 7th, 2016, on a friend’s PLEX account.

Had I seen this film already?

Nope.

What did I know about the movie before watching it?

This is the highest ranking Coen brothers movie on the IMDb Top 250.  After Fargo and No Country for Old MenI was hoping for something more refreshing.

What do I know about it now?

What a waste of time.  I turned it off an hour into it, as soon as some girl turned around for a pointless full frontal.  I was never engaged, though I found Lebowski himself endearing at times.  His main cohort (Goodman), while memorable, was annoying and crass above the point of being humorous.  Everything about it felt farcical and useless, which might have been intentional, but there was nothing redeeming about the wandering ways of this film.  F-bombs litter the whole thing, almost as if the Coen brothers had nothing better to write.  What a disappointment.

What are some themes in the film?

I have no idea.  It’s a brain-dead film.

Did this affect me personally?

It has that meme moment in the first 15 minutes.

4fcdf2e118613355b500ba5d

Yeah, that one. He also said something to the effect of “I did not know that.”  That made me laugh.

Why is this ranked #145?

Coen brothers, big name cast and lots of shenanigans.  That’s about it.

Did my wife watch/like it?

She was in the same room, and was quite annoyed with the whole thing without even watching it.

Would I watch it again?

No.

Would I recommend it to a friend?

I’m sure my friends have seen this and love it.  You’re allowed to enjoy movies, but this is kind of like eating a cup of dirt and telling everyone it’s good because it has gummy worms in it.

Does it deserve to be on this list as one of the greatest films of all time?

No.  I’m not certain why it’s on this list, nor why it’s ranked so high.  Is this REALLY better than The Wizard of Oz, Shutter Island, and Dial M for Murder, among countless others?  Let me answer that for you: it’s not.
